Matthew 24:17: "Let the (one) upon the housetop not go-down to-take the (things) out-of his house."
Matthew 24:18: "And let the (one) in the field not turn behind to-take his cloak."
1st century audience?
It is written in Matthew 24:15-18: "when YOU-see the abomination (of) desolation — the (thing) having-been-spoken through Daniel the prophet — standing in (the) holy place (let the (one) reading understand), AT-THAT-TIME let the (ones) in Judea be-fleeing to the mountains. Let the (one) upon the housetop not go-down to-take the (things) out-of his house. And let the (one) in the field not turn behind to-take his cloak".
Who can be the "YOU" (Matthew 24:15) addressed in this passage?
12 verses earlier, Jesus spoke to His 1st century disciples, as "the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us" (Matthew 24:3) and "having-responded, Jesus said (to) them" (Matthew 24:4) these things.
Jesus in Matthew 24:15 said to His 1st century disciples "when YOU-see" (Matthew 24:15) the abomination of desolation, "AT-THAT-TIME" (Matthew 24:16) "Let the (one) upon the housetop not go-down to-take the (things) out-of his house. And let the (one) in the field not turn behind to-take his cloak" (Matthew 24:17-18).
Local event around Jerusalem?
Jesus said: "let the (one) upon the housetop not go-down to-take the (things) out-of his house. And let the (one) in the field not turn behind to-take his cloak" (Matthew 24:17-18).
In the parallel account in Luke, Jesus said: "let the (ones) in (the) midst (of) HER be-going-out. And let the (ones) in the fields not be-entering into HER" (Luke 21:21).
By the pronoun "HER" (Luke 21:21), Jesus would have referred to JERUSALEM which He mentioned in the previous verse in Luke 21:20, saying: "when you-see JERUSALEM being-surrounded by army-encampments, then recognize that HER desolation has-drawn-near. At-that-time let the (ones) in Judea be-fleeing to the mountains. And let the (ones) in (the) midst (of) HER be-going-out. And let the (ones) in the fields not be-entering into HER" (Luke 21:20-21).
Both the Greek noun for "JERUSALEM" (Luke 21:20) and the Greek pronoun for "HER" (Luke 21:20-21) are in the feminine gender and in the singular.
First century living conditions?
Jesus said: "Let the (one) UPON THE HOUSETOP not go-down to-take the (things) out-of his house" (Matthew 24:17).
In the 1st century around Jerusalem, most roofs were flat and people could be on them.
For example, when Jesus was in a house, some people came from the roof: "they-come bringing to Him a paralytic being-picked-up by four (men). And not being-able to-bring (him) to Him because-of the crowd, they-unroofed the roof where He-was. And having-dug-out (an opening), they-lower the cot on-which the paralytic was-lying-down" (Mark 2:3-4).
Another example, "Peter went-up UPON THE HOUSETOP around (the) sixth hour to-pray" (Acts 10:9).
Jesus said: "let the (one) in the FIELD not turn behind to-take his cloak" (Matthew 24:18).
2 chapters earlier, Jesus mentioned people being busy in their own FIELD: "the (ones), having-paid-no-concern, departed — one to (his) own FIELD, and another on his business" (Matthew 22:5).
Jesus hinted at how important FIELDS were to people in the 1st century: "Jesus said, “Truly I-say (to) YOU, there-is no-one who left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or FIELDS for-the-sake (of) Me and for-the-sake (of) the good-news except he-receive (a) hundred-fold now in this time" (Mark 10:29-30).
This would make sense that in that context people could struggle leaving their FIELD to be fleeing immediately somewhere else.
In the 1st century, believers in "Jerusalem" (Acts 4:16) were also recorded selling things, including for example a FIELD, as Barnabas who had "(a) FIELD belonging (to) him — having-made-a-sale, brought the money and laid (it) at the feet (of) the apostles" (Acts 4:37).
